ABOUT THE ARTIST

Drawn to the ineffable and the curious nature of the real, Regina DeLuise explores the visual complexities of contemporary experience through interiors, still life, portraiture and landscape photography. She is moved by the power of the photographic image and its uncanny ability to embody the depth and richness of the human experience. Her images reveal a great love of the medium, the recognition of light, circumstance, and a need to roam toward the unknown.

Regina DeLuise is an artist, photographer and educator currently based in Baltimore, Maryland. She is a Guggenheim Fellow and has spent the major part of her career represented by Bonni Benrubi Gallery in NYC. Regina has received Fellowships at the Bogliasco Foundation in Bogliasco, Italy, MASS MoCA, North Adams, MA, and is the recipient of the 2019 Meredith Moody Residency at Yaddo in Saratoga Springs, NY.

DeLuise has traveled throughout the world with her 8 x 10, large format view camera and works with the Platinum/Palladium printing process. She has produced work in collaboration with communities in Bhutan, Nepal, Northern India, and Europe. Regina’s work is included in private and public collections including the Museum of Modern Art and Metropolitan Museum of Art in NY, Brooklyn Museum, Art Institute of Chicago, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Smithsonian Museum of American History, Houston Museum of Fine Art, The Katzen Art Center, American University, The Corcoran Legacy Collection, Washington D.C., Spencer Art Museum, Lawrence, KS , Museum of Contemporary Religious Art in St Louis, MO and The Canadian Centre for Architecture in Montreal. She is on the Creative Advisory Board for Lens on Life Project, a nonprofit organization, supporting photography and computer literacy training for at-risk youth.

Since 2007, Regina has been on the full-time faculty at Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore. Previous to this, she was an adjunct professor at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, The Smithsonian Residence Associate Program in Washington, D.C. and the University of Georgia, Studies Abroad in Cortona, Italy. Before coming to teaching, Regina worked at Daniel Wolf Gallery in NYC and co-founded Elm Street Arts, a cooperative gallery in Manchester, Vermont.

Regina DeLuise was born in Brooklyn, NY, received her BFA from SUNY Purchase and an MA from Rosary College, Graduate School of Fine Arts in Florence, Italy.

In a piece written in conjunction with Regina DeLuise’s exhibition Photographs from the Field, Felicia McCarren speaks eloquently to the way in which the artist moves through the world with her camera. 

“Under the dark cloth covering the camera, as if inclining to her subject, Regina engages in a dance with tripod and large view, subject and shutter release-veiled by the dark cloth, bowing to check the image on the ground glass, then throwing it off urgently to see the scene before her, setting the frame and then waiting; the time of the camera is another kind of time. The time of the taking of the picture is a moment in time. The photograph takes a certain time, in a way that makes the pictures tell us something of their time and place that is beyond simple resemblance. They register being there.”
